25 years ago, on January 13th 1991, Soviet troops took over the TV tower and committee radio and television station building with the aim of overthrowing the legally elected government. The army failed to avoid victims near the tower when they started moving military grade equipment and shooting at unarmed people.
The Parliament building was protected by tens of thousands of citizens. This day serves to remember and honor all those who fought back and gave their lives for the defense of their country's freedom.
During this day, various events take place in different parts of Lithuania. Such events include demonstrations, rallies and civic education lessons in schools and exhibitions. There are also evening holy masses at the Vilnius Cathedral, churches and payer houses of other religious committees.
