The President: Lithuania is prepared to work for EU Green Deal goals

 

On Thursday, President Gitanas Nausėda arrived in Brussels for a two-day session of the European Council convened to discuss the fight against climate change, the Brexit negotiations, and EU-Africa relations. The EU leaders also assessed the overall response to the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, the epidemiological situation and progress in vaccine development.

Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius met with Canada’s Foreign Minister in Vilnius


The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with his Canadian counterpart François-Philippe Champagne in Vilnius. The Foreign Ministers discussed bilateral relations, the situation in Belarus and Ukraine, the relationship with Russia, and the current security environment in the region.

Canada’s Foreign Minister will visit Lithuania for the first time in 24 years. The Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy visited Vilnius in 1996.

The Lithuanian transport sector is planning an essential transformation in order to implement the EU Green Deal


Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr. Jaroslav Narkevič introduced the objective to the managers of the enterprises within the regulatory area of the ministry to prepare a wide programme for the transport sector,  aiming to transform the transport sector according to the European Green  Deal, to help to restore the sector after COVID-19 crisis and to use  the opportunities provided by the new EU facility for that purpose.

Lithuania looks to expand participation in WHO's coronavirus treatment trial


Clinical trials of Covid-19 treatments are taking place in Lithuania and the number of participants could soon be increased to 200, the country's Health Ministry says.

Solidarity is an international clinical trial to help find an effective treatment for Covid-19, launched by the World Health Organization and partners. In Lithuania, the trial is being carried out by Vilnius University's Santara Clinic in Vilnius and the Kaunas Clinic of the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences.

Lithuania to build one of the largest battery parks in the world

 

Lithuania will build one of the largest battery storage systems in the world by the end of 2021, its energy minister told Reuters, to ensure smooth supply of power as it disconnects from the Russian-controlled grid.

The country plans to invest 100 million euros (90.8 million pounds) to install four 50 Megawatt(MW) batteries with at least 200 Megawatt hours (MWh) of storage capacity, said Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas.

The CityTelling Festival, one of the biggest events of the "Kaunas 2022" programme "Memory Office", announced its start yesterday and will last until this Sunday, October 11! During the first day of the festival, two exhibitions opened their doors, four history-enriched lunches took place, a work of street art and other artistic events were presented. And in the evening, the sound and lights installation "Piece, piece..." that honored the composer Vidmantas Bartulis of the cantata that unites history, memory, different denominations, generations, artists and communities closed the first day of the festival     |

Berlin to build memorial for Nazis' victims in Baltics, Eastern Europe

 

A tribute to the victims of Nazis in the Baltic states, Poland and Eastern Europe is heralded as a “milestone” in Germany's remembrance culture.

The German Parliament agreed Friday that a new memorial should be constructed in the capital city to commemorate all victims of Nazi Germany's war of extermination, including those in Eastern European nations affected by the Nazi occupation.

A defensive wall engirdled Vilnius, and at the same time gates around the city were installed. Monument to partisan leader, Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas, unveiled



On 6 October 2020, at the Pantheon of the State Leaders in the Antakalnis Cemetery, a ceremony was held to unveil the tombstone monument dedicated to Adolfas Ramanauskas codenamed Vanagas (Eagle), Signatory to the 16 February 1949 Declaration of the Council of the Movement of the Struggle for Freedom of Lithuania, Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces of the Movement of the Struggle for Freedom of Lithuania (LLKS), and Head of State of Lithuania who had fought against the Soviet occupation.

Lietuvos Paštas takes a step towards electrification

 

Lithuanian postal operator Lietuvos paštas has leased two new 100% Volkswagen Crafter electric vans for use in the centre of Vilnius. 

The vans will be used to deliver items to post offices and sometimes to customers. Two charging stations have been installed in Lietuvos paštas's new logistics centre specifically for these vehicles.

The European Commission has provided unprecedented support for the second stage of the project to synchronize the Baltic countries’ power grids with that of continental Europe, Lithuania’s Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas has said

 

The Commission has allocated 720 mln euros for the second stage of the synchronization project, including 301 mln euros for Lithuania. 

“This support is truly unprecedented, not a single project has ever been granted such level of support from the CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) until now. Also, it is extremely pleasing that we have got the support of such intensity – at the maximum co-financing rate of 75%,” the minister said at a news conference on Friday.
