The President: Unity between nations brought victory in the Battle of Žalgiris (Grunwald)

 

President Gitanas Nausėda took part in a festive ceremony to commemorate the 610th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald in Poland. In his  speech, the President underscored close cooperation bonds between  Lithuania and Poland built on centuries-long shared history and best  embodied in their legendary victory on the battlefield of Grunwald.

New technology for advanced health monitoring of stroke survivors patented in Lithuania

 

Group of biomedical engineers from biotech company Gruppo Fos Lithuania together with researchers at Kaunas University of Technology and Lithuanian University of Health Sciences have patented technology for advanced health monitoring of stroke survivors. It is the first solution in the world which monitors and analyses simultaneously a patient's health parameters from the affected part of the brain and those of the cardiovascular system.

Klaipeda’s ambitions in the realm of electric public transport

 

Klaipeda’s vision for its public transportation is to have fast and electric busses rolling through the city’s main streets, allowing the citizens to comfortably save time, while also protecting the environment. Ten busses could hit the streets next year if the city council passes relevant legislation and takes care of the necessary bureaucratic procedures swiftly enough. There are plans to use EU aid to achieve this goal as well.

Initiatives to help businesses in the face of the pandemic

 


Up to date, Lithuania has less than 1900 total cases and less than 100 deaths related to COVID-19. This shows that the response from the government agencies, business and the population has been effective.

During the pandemic, the Lithuanian Government was seeking to ensure that the suppliers would be capable of meeting the greatly increased demand for different personal protective equipment (PPE) categories due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was publicly declared that the priority of supply will be given to local manufacturers of PPE to stimulate the economy.

Žalgiris, Tannenberg, Grunwald? How to call 1410 Polish–Lithuanian victory against German knights

 

On July 15, 1410, the alliance between the Lithuanian forces, led by Grand Duke Vytautas, and the Polish army fought and defeated the German–Prussian Teutonic Knights in one of the largest battles in medieval Europe.

The Lithuanians call the battle Žalgiris, which has gained huge prominence, as the name is now being used in the titles of sports clubs and other brands. But the famous battle name could have also been different.

Discovering the growth of Vilnius via Open House tours

 

This year, the annual Open House festival in Vilnius that offers unhindered access into iconic buildings moved outdoors, weaving together the story of Vilnius’ expansion since the 19th century. Ludo Segers, a freelance photographer, joined one of the tours.

Vilnius boasts a cornucopia of architectural styles, ranging from splendid Baroque to the latest green buildings. The latter are mainly concentrated around Konstitucijos Avenue on the right bank of the Neris river.

Samuel Bak’s Vilnius

 

Samuel Bak’s relationship with Vilnius was a complex one, as complex as can only be experienced by a person who has lived through both paradise and hell here.

Born in Polish Vilnius in 1933 into the family of Jonas, a Jewish dental technician, and Mita Bak, the lone child Samek was spoilt by his parents and grandparents. ‘My mother convinced me that I was special, that I lived in paradise, and that I absolutely deserved it,’ Bak writes in his memoir Painted in Words. ‘My parents wanted to give me the best they could.’

A toy for hospitalised children and an experimental clothing collection are among the varied student projects in this VDF school show, curated by the Design Innovation Centre of Vilnius Academy of Arts.

A total of 14 students are featured in the exhibition, chosen by the Lithuanian university's Design Innovation Centre from the participants of this year's Young Designer Prize – its annual competition that was established to aid the professional development of young designers.

Lithuania sends €50,000-worth of coronavirus aid to Belarus


Lithuania is sending a shipment of humanitarian aid to Belarus to help the neighbouring country combat the coronavirus pandemic.

In early June, the Lithuanian cabinet allocated 50,000 euros for aid to Belarus in response to Minsk's request for international assistance.

SpaceX to carry Lithuanian satellites into space

 

Lithuanian company has concluded a contract with Elon Musk's private space transportation company SpaceX to launch its satellites into space. 

The first satellite produced by NanoAvionics is to be taken into orbit by the end of this year. 

“If you launch a satellite with a camera, you can cover a bigger area and compare how things change with time,” says NanoAvionics co-founder Vytenis Buzas. “[For example] a river eroding the bank or the change of traffic flows.”

Vilnius centre becomes art gallery


Lithuanian capital Vilnius has turned its centre into an open-air art gallery. The outdoor advertising exhibition contains 100 works of local art. Art lovers may contact the artists through the special website. The website contains images and descriptions of art objects, their prices and contacts of authors.

"Although art galleries are already open, the restrictions for social gatherings remain in place," said Remigijus Šimašius, the mayor of Vilnius.

Lithuania's National Museum amasses exhibits for a show about Covid-19 pandemic

 

The National Museum of Lithuania has received more than 130 exhibits since April when it published an open invitation for people to send various items related to the coronavirus pandemic.

The most interesting exhibits will be put on display shortly, while the museum may hold a larger exhibition dedicated to the pandemic in the future.
